The South by Colm Toibin
The South by Colm Toibin is an intense, though fitful chronicle of a woman's life, a life as yet incomplete. It presents a patchwork of detail amidst vast tracts of unknown, like a painting that has a suggestion of complete outline interspersed with patches of intricate detail. Thus, eventually, we know some amazing things about Katherine Proctor and we have shared much of her life.

The Heart of the Country by Fay Weldon
The Heart Of The Country scrapes through the surface of a rural idyll to reveal people doing what people do. In a rural English setting, we find a caricature of modern British society and its inter-relationships.

The Clinton Diaries
Consider, if you would, what were the private thoughts of Bill Clinton as he faced the charges related to his relationship with Monica Lewinsky. The Clinton Diaries fictionalized those personal thoughts and the dialogue while the overall story is based upon extensive research of the major incident in US History. Well written and thoroughly believable.

Webs of Power - A Powerful Drama!
Webs of Power is a work of fiction; however, if you happen to fill a high-level position in some corporate hierarchy, you may think you're reading a story about your own company! Darlene Quinn has done an excellent job in taking readers into the fast-paced and sometimes terror-filled world of high finance and corporate takeovers. This time, for department stores, in the late 1980s.

Book Review For "Push Not the River"
"Push Not the River" is a gripping tale of love and loss, not just on a personal scale, but on a national scale, as the Polish nation is finally taken over by the Russians in 1794. "Push Not the River," is a story based on the Countess Anna Maria Berezowska's diary which she kept from 1791-1794.

Penguin Books India, one of the most famous publishers in India, has indeed added a glorious literary feather to its already shiny image by publishing this book of marvelously multidimensional proportions. The literary audience was delighted when the book was published-in fact it has been one of the most impatiently awaited fiction book of the year-in June this year. 'A Fine Balance' by Rohinton Mistry
A long rambling tale, this is still a very readable book. Fatalistic and dour, but relieved by humour and insight. A work of genius.

Animal Farm Book Review
George Orwell's Animal Farm may seem rather simple on the surface - the story of a Manor Farm's animals taking over and kicking out their oppressive farmer - but it's also an allegorical tale. Orwell is illustrating his own thoughts on Soviet Communism.

Waterland (1983) - Graham Swift
I think that it's a given that we are sum of our own experiences. But, of course, we are also dependent to some degree on our parents' experiences, without which we would not have gotten our start in life, and by which we are heavily influenced in our early years. And thus they were dependent upon their parents' experiences, and, consequently, so are we. Also, we are the sum of our parent's genes, and they of their parents' genes, and so on, ad infinitum.

Five Helpings of Drama With a Dash of Sass - "Baby Daddy Drama - Let the Games Begin" Reviewed
A freshman in the ranks of the urban pulp fiction genre, A.G. Fielder's debut novel simply entitled "Baby Daddy Drama: Let the Games Begin" is quickly turning heads and sparking chatter around office water coolers. The book chronicles the lives of five thirty-something women whose lives only intersect when it comes to the myriad of antics drummed up by the fathers of their children.

Trainspotting (1993) - Irvine Welsh
A person without hope is little more than an animal. With no ability to see the future, the present is all that there is. There are no rules. The word consequence is not in their vocabulary. Theft, violence, drugs (legal and illegal), casual sex; when there is no tomorrow, anything goes.

Overtaken (2003) - Alexei Sayle
Alexei Sayle's first novel since 1984's Train to Hell comes as something of a pleasant surprise. His short fiction, whilst being thoroughly enjoyable, and of a patchily high standard, didn't really fill me with enthusiasm for his writing in a longer format.

Book Review For "Case of the Missing Coach"
Zabel's youth filled adventure/mystery novel, "Case of the Missing Coach," challengers readers to solve the case right along with the main character, Ryan. It's fun, harrowing at times, but the reader can't deny Ryan's - or Zabel's - love of baseball which shines through the novel. It's a solid, youth story that all can enjoy.

Debut Book "Every Day Life" Finally Tells Us All Like it Is
This book is the most important piece of Black Literature since Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the sun" and just as important to Hip-Hop as The SugarHill Gang's "Rapper's delight." It invites those tired of Black Harlequins to try something different. It also invites you to Be Real because Reparations to African-Americans are not coming any time soon.

Kalpa Imperial by Angelica Gorodischer, Translated by Ursula K LeGuin - A Little Known Gem
Angelica Gorodischer may be extremely famous in Argentina, but to me it was the name of Ursula K. LeGuin that made me start reading. By the time I finished "Kalpa Imperial" I was ready to seek out more from Ms. Gorodischer-so if anyone is working on a translation hurry it up!

June 2508 by James Bhumi - A Strong New Voice Has Emerged in Speculative Fiction
The scientific developments in this book feel possible. They seem to be logical if frequently surprising results of research that is being performed today. Certainly it is difficult to predict with any accuracy what direction may be taken as gifted students and scientists study new concepts; just look at what's happened in the last 500 years to get an idea of what might change. Yet despite a number of paradigm shifts over that time our science today at least has its roots in the science of 1508. A look at history can be one of the best ways of understanding our current situation, be we looking at politics, military capability, environmental issues, or virtually any other topic.

A Different Reading Experience
The outside world holds little interest to Littluns. It's not that they don't know about such things and what goes on out there. On the contrary, they know very well about the chaos and discord and will have nothing to do with it.

Book Review For "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows"
In this last installment of the series, Harry, along with his friends, Ron and Hermione, are in pursuit of Voldemort's horcruxes, determined to destroy them before Harry confronts the Dark Lord for the last time. The book starts out with Harry at the Dursleys, and it's surprising, yet pleasant, to see how Dudley has matured along with Harry.

English is a Bloody Nightmare, Isn't It?
- A Review for A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers. About one third into Guo Xiaolu's novel A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers, a man at an English pub says to the confused protagonist, a young Chinese woman named Z, "English is a bloody nightmare, isn't it?" Yet the author, who writes in her second language, is capable of turning a nightmare into muse. Have you ever talked to someone who did not speak your language very well and wondered about their innermost thoughts?

Honeycomb by Israel Del Rio - Book Review
Having committed a redeeming act in a former life, a man is granted the gift to choose his next life by a spirit guide. From thousands of scrolls, he is asked to choose only five. Each scroll represents a life, and the man is allowed to view scenes from each. He must decide which life will be the best fit for him. He comes to realize each life is linked to the other four, just as in a honeycomb each section is connected to another, and at the same time, honey (love) is life's abundance.

The Ice Queen by Alice Hoffman
The Ice Queen is a perfect beach read; light, thoughtful and surprising. What surprised me about the book were the intriguing characters and plot twists. The characters were complicated; no one is black and white. Each of us has hidden parts that may shock those around us - "If they only knew..." we wonder silently.

The Legend of Harry Potter
A young wizard armed with spells capable of causing mass destruction. A boy struggling to come to terms with his troubled past. A faithful person prepared to lay down his life for saving his friends. All these descriptions are applicable for Harry Potter, a character made immortal by the now legendary British author J.K. Rowling in a series of novels originally created for children.

In "I, Lucifer" by Glen Duncan, Lucifer gets a final chance to save his soul and gain his way back into heaven. To do this, Lucifer must live out the rest of his life in a human body, and when he dies a mortal death (however that life ends), if he has lived a life deserving of a seat in heaven, he will return to heaven in his angelic form. Lucifer is able to convince God to give him a one month "trial" in human form, and at the end of that month, he will decide whether to continue in human form, or to spend the rest of eternity in nothingness.

"The Soul Thief" by Charles Baxter - Book Review
"The Soul Thief" by Charles Baxter is the story of how human interactions can deeply impact, and stick with someone over one's whole lifetime. Nathaniel Mason, with the exception of being a graduate student in New York, is indiscernible from everyone else. Essentially, he is a nobody. However, after one particular party, Nathaniel meets some interesting people, and begins to discover his own identity, but also risks losing it at the same time.

Dreaming About Genie
The word Genie was first used when France published a translation of "The Book of 1001 Nights". The Arabic Djinn was translated as "genie", the French word meaning a supernatural spirit. This word was picked up by the English translators, and so the word "Genie" entered our vocabulary. The phrase "Lost in Translation" becomes very appropriate here when one learns the original meaning of the word "Djinn".

Rue De La Pompe - A Satiric Urban Fantasy by James Earle McCracken - Book Review
Celebrating his thirtieth birthday alone in Paris, American businessman Michael Whyte realizes it is entirely possible to live an unglamorous life in the world's most glamorous city. But an unexpected gift of formal wear followed by a party invitation from his eccentric neighbors sends him upon a strange quest for the first French franc-a coin said to be both incredibly valuable and capable of being a dangerous weapon. Michael tries to keep from taking sides in the debate about the franc's powers or getting involved in its search, but every time he steps outside his apartment, he finds that the quest is on. With a deaf-mute for a guide and an epistemologist for a mentor, Michael careens across Paris in his quest for the coin. James Earle McCracken's satire spares no one and nothing as he pokes fun at Japanese tourists, French restaurant menus, alligators discussing cheese, pacifist Dutchmen, and American culture shock. Both hilarious and introspective, "Rue de la Pompe" is a fast-paced ride through the City of Lights with a hapless American who is caught in an exhilarating journey of discovery.

Fiction Books - Creating a New Sense of Enthusiasm in Readers
There is no shortage for the information and knowledge resources in this modern world. Among these resources, however only some of the resources are giving the correct information to people. In these, there is no better and perfect choice than books as they are maintaining their consistency in providing accurate information to their readers from the past many centuries.

Book Review For "Against a Crimson Sky"
"Against a Crimson Sky" takes a gripping historical look at the final partition of Poland (1795), it's people, and tells the personal story of the Stelnickis. Martin uses a grand, sweeping style reminiscent of epic storytelling to paint a vivid picture of the era. "Against a Crimson Sky" is a book that can easily be visualized on the movie screen.

Book Review - Ravenstone
Archaeologist Jake Lalonde searches for the origins of the icon of the mythical raven, as depicted in an ancient carving off the coast of British Columbia. Haunting his dreams, his search finds him is so far from what is expected that it leaves him breathless and nearly distracted enough to forget a deadly threat to his and Angeline's lives. Deborah Cannon brings legends into a new light in "Ravenstone," the third in a series but also a stand alone novel.

Another Roadside Attraction Book Review
Coming up with a summary of "Another Roadside Attraction," Tom Robbins' first novel, is a difficult thing. On the surface, it's about just another roadside attraction in the 1960s, one run by a beautiful gypsy and a magician.

The Stories of Devil-Girl by Anya Achtenberg - Book Review
What happens when children are told they are no good? When they are abused, neglected, and treated as worthless? Anya Achtenberg explores the dark, sad world of childhood abuse and how one girl found the power to rise above it in the heart-aching, powerfully told "The Stories of Devil- Girl." Born into the Jewish slums of Brooklyn, Devil-Girl is raised to believe she has the devil in her, or at least he is at work in her life. Her abusive mother teaches her she is worthless. But hope always exists. The novel will inspire those in abusive situations to overcome their pasts. Readers will become more aware of child-abuse and the importance of building a child's self-esteem. First released as an audiobook, "The Stories of Devil-Girl" will emphasize for people the importance of letting children's voices be heard and the necessity of being the voice for children who cannot raise their own.

The Cadfael Series by Ellis Peters - A Book Review
Ellis Peters' Cadfael series are more than murder mysteries. Cadfael's herbarium evokes in me the sense of strength, aroma, and security that a room filled with drying and stored herbs would add to the homestead.

The Magic of Harry Potter
In the fictional series of Harry Potter that was created by J.K. Rowling, magic is depicted as a natural force, which can be used to overrule the basic laws of nature although it is approached entirely scientifically. In the Harry Potter series, there are a number of magical creatures - and a few ordinary creatures - which demonstrate magical properties, like the owls used to deliver posts. There are also a few objects that are imbued or enhanced with magical power. A few humans in the series that are able to perform magic have been referred to as wizards and witches in contrast to other non magical Muggles.

The End of the Affair by Graham Greene
Anyone who has lived in London could place the Common that forms a geographical centrepiece in The End Of The Affair by Graham Greene. It doesn't really matter if it's the particular place one thinks it is, because it's what happens in the houses at or near its periphery that is central to the book. And the relationships between man and woman, between classes, between interests could be anywhere.

Quondam - An Ancient Mirror's Tale by Jayel Gibson - Book Review
A dragon spawn is derided by those around him, but one woman, Cwen, comes to love him. Will he choose to love her, or will he choose to be a dragon? Readers experience escapism but return to the real world braced in love, loyalty, and hope.

Edith and the Mysterious Stranger by Linda Weaver Clarke - Book Review
Return to the time when love and life were simple- when lovers, courting, chose words carefully in their letters rather than sending off yet another quick text message. When a young woman in the Wild West begins to receive anonymous letters, she falls in love with a man she's never met in Linda Weaver Clarke's "Edith and the Mysterious Stranger." Linda Weaver Clarke perfectly captures the Old West in her descriptions and tone. She does not focus on the sensational elements of gunfights only, but also the everyday lives of ordinary people.

The Handyman's Promise by Nick Poff - Book Review
As the AIDS crisis dawns in the early 1980s, two small-town gay men make a commitment to one another. While a good deal of gay fiction focuses on sex, one author takes a closer look at what it means for two men to have a meaningful relationship. That author is Nick Poff, recently awarded the Gold medal in Gay/Lesbian fiction by ForeWord Magazine.

Dark Days For the Rights of Englishmen (John Mortimer's "Rumpole Misbehaves")
Is John Mortimer trying to wean us away from Rumpole? His latest Rumpole book, Rumpole Misbehaves, clocks in at a mere 197 pages of unusually large type. I suppose you can't blame an infirm 85-year-old man for writing economically, but neither can you blame his fans for wanting as much Rumpole as possible.

In the Forest, By Edna O'Brien - Briefly Reviewed
Edna O'Brien's In the Forest is a fictionalization of the murder of a young child and his mother in Ireland by a very disturbed young man. Apparently, the book created a huge furore at the time as the crime was very well-covered in the press. O'Brien has created a tale of a dysfunctional, sociopathic young man, Michen O'Kane, who is institutionalized at an early age, and his encounter with an outsider, Eily.

Narrow Lives by Tyler R Tichelaar - Book Review
Lysander Blackmore is someone everyone knows, and yet no one really knows him. People suffer from his actions, but they cannot understand what motivates his behavior. How he affects those around him, creating a world of shame and confusion, is dissected in "Narrow Lives." Author Tyler R. Tichelaar returns to the time and place of his regionally bestselling "The Marquette Trilogy," but "Narrow Lives," rather than being a nostalgic look at the past, recalls the social restrictions and hypocrisies of the early twentieth century.

Theme - The Big Picture of Fiction
Though a theme may be only be implicitly understood , the "big picture" of a story is something universally understood by readers. It is the general and overall concept to a story. Of course, "Love conquers all" is the theme romance readers come to expect in romance novels.

The Organ Grinder and the Monkey by Sam Moffie Book Review
This is a very interesting novel about three protagonists, very different from each other, who share something in common. The reader will follow their intriguing journey.

Book Review - Illicit Blade of Grass by John Reyer Afamasaga
Modern inter-textual novel by up and coming author. Afamasaga has created a fictional world that blends reality and fiction until they are indistinguishable throughout a series of inter-textual novels.

Literary Fiction: Don Quixote in Annie Hastings
Annie T. Hastings, a birth-mother who hunts for her child thirty years after giving the child up for adoption, is a modern version of a female Don Quixote. Like Quixote, she fights with windmills thinking they are monsters, and at other times she must truly battle the people in her life. Hers is a story of perception, of point of view. Of what is real and what is not real.

Reunion by Fred Uhlman - Book Review
This is a superb little book about young men growing up in 1930's Germany. Beautifully written by a craftsman at the peak of his powers, it is the perfect book for anyone who can't tackle huge tomes. Try not to miss it.

'Kill Your Friends' by John Niven
You're probably like me. As a wee bairn you wanted to be an astronaut, a marketer (ahem) or a pop star. And whilst I and many of my contemporaries have indeed become astronauts and marketing managers, no one from Norton Comprehensive has, to date, troubled the 'hit parade'.

Dystopian Novels - 1984, Brave New World and Never Let Me Go
A "dystopia" is the opposite of a utopia -an ideal world. Both have been the subject of various novels and films. Perhaps for dramatic reasons, dystopias tend to be a little more interesting.

Fiction Books - Enhance Your Imaginative Skills
Books are the quietest and the most constant friends of the people. They are the most accessible and the wisest counsellors, and the most patient teachers. One should always try to read something that would make him or her look and feel good.

Three Chords by Mike Mihalek - Book Review
Ethan is a successful musician, but despite the success, he goes through periods of self- examination. Missing in his life is his mother who left the family when he was only ten. Author Mike Mihalek uses music as a metaphor for the relationship of his characters. Julie, John, and their son, Ethan, are reflected in the novel's title "Three Chords," which is told with compelling dialogue, clear images, and realistic character portraits. The novel haunts readers as they relate to the characters' broken relationships and their longings to correct the past.

A Handful of Sand by Mary Louise McCaffrey - Book Review
Romeo and Juliet step aside. Your tragic ending does not satisfy. Just ask Mary Louise McCaffrey, who has written her own story of star- crossed lovers, Miguel and Isabella. As if class difference between the lovers is not enough, their families are on opposite sides of the French invasion of Mexico that divides the nation, further frustrating the lovers' efforts to be together. The result is a historical romance of epic proportions, "A Handful of Sand."

A Good Woman by Dorothy Weil - Book Review
Mary Lou Friedman, a spunky 86- year-old with an ailing husband, is being threatened by hoodlums in her Cincinnati neighborhood, forcing her to fight for her family and home in Dorothy Weil's latest novel, "A Good Woman." Throughout this tender story, told in third person from Mary Lou's perspective, the reader is taken back in time with Mary Lou as she recounts her past experiences that range from the Great Depression to the book's present setting of the early 1990s.
